When Spine Surgery is Not the Answer

In this case, a patient was complaining of numbness, pain and weakness in his hand/forearm. He thought he might be suffering from a pinched nerve in his neck which can cause these types of symptoms. However, when I examined him, I sensed this was not correct. I sent him for a nerve test and his problem turned out to be carpal tunnel syndrome which can easily be confused for cervical radiculopathy (a pinched nerve in the neck). I always try to choose the least invasive method of treatment and In this case he needed a carpal tunnel release which is technically a simpler procedure with a faster recovery than a cervical decompression operation, not to mention much more likely to alleviate his problem.

Neurological conditions are easily confused and misdiagnosed. For me listening to the patient's story and performing a physical exam helps determine the true cause of symptoms. Advanced medical tests such as MRIs are useful but cannot be relied upon with 100% certainty. As a clinician, focusing on the patient and getting the correct diagnosis is very rewarding. Its also very helpful when the patient paints a clear picture of the symptoms which are bothersome.
