Why Art is Important in Surgery

Discussing the intersection Between Art and Medicine on the Art of Medicine Podcast w/ Andrew Wilner MD

Recently I spoke on the podcast, The Art of Medicine, with Dr. Andrew Wilner, a neurologist and great conversationalist. In the talk, we discuss the importance of art to me as a surgeon and explore how art can help patients and physicians better understand the problems of the spine. For physicians, a deep understanding of patients and their back and neck issues is essential but sometimes communicating the nuances of care in words is difficult. Art is a useful tool for improving communication with patients and for the surgeon to better comprehend complex problems. In this podcast we delve into the humanness of art and medicine and how it reaffirmed my commitment to the bond that exists between patient and physician.
