Visiting the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Orthopaedic Program

It was my great privilege to lecture at the Orthopedic Surgery program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga over the weekend. We discussed the rise of artificial intelligence in medicine, orthopedics and society. Artificial intelligence can already identify pathology on x-rays, determine surgical risk and many other tasks that in the past only humans could perform. Machine learning and neural networks (a type of artificial intelligence) will have a dramatic impact on the practice of medicine in the future, and I felt it was important to share my knowledge of it with these future leaders. I also got to hear a a great presentation on cervical myelopathy from one of the residents, Dr. Morrow as well as the perspectives on spine surgery from the interns.

A special thanks to the Orthopedic residents who gave me such a warm welcome. Looking forward to watching you guys continue to excel.

Here we all are pictured in the Dr. Peter J Nowotarski Library.
